The History of Nepal: From Ancient Kingdoms to a Federal Democratic Republic
Nestled in the central Himalayas between India and China, Nepal possesses a continuous civilization spanning several millennia. From its origins as a sacred lake in ancient chronicles to its emergence as a unified sovereign state and modern republic, Nepal’s history is defined by resilience, architectural brilliance, and cultural synthesis.
1. Ancient Period (प्राचीन काल: गोपाल, किरात र लिच्छवि वंश)
English:
According to ancient Nepalese chronicles (Gopalarajavamshavali), the Kathmandu Valley was originally a vast lake drained by Bodhisattva Manjushree to make it habitable.
Gopal and Mahishpal Dynasties: The earliest rulers of the Nepal Valley were the Gopal (cowherd) kings, beginning with King Bhuktaman, followed by the Mahishpal (buffalo-herder) dynasty.
Kirat Dynasty (c. 800 BCE – 300 CE): Yalambar defeated the last Mahishpal king, Bhuwan Singh, to establish the Kirat Dynasty. During this era, Nepal became a thriving hub of trans-Himalayan wool and herb trade. In 563 BCE, Prince Siddhartha Gautam (Lord Buddha) was born in Lumbini inside the Shakya Republic. Later, in the 3rd century BCE, Mauryan Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini during the reign of the 14th Kirat king, Sthunko, and erected the famous Ashoka Pillar confirming Buddha’s birthplace.
Licchavi Period – The Golden Age (c. 400 – 750 CE): The Licchavis succeeded the Kirats and ushered in the Golden Age of ancient Nepal. King Manadeva I erected the earliest dated stone inscription of Nepal at Changu Narayan in 464 CE. Amshuverma built the magnificent seven-story Kailashkut Bhawan and strengthened diplomacy with Tibet through the marriage of Nepali Princess Bhrikuti to Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo.

2. Medieval Period (मध्यकाल र मल्ल वंश)
English:
The medieval era began with the transition from Licchavi rule and the establishment of Nepal Sambat on October 20, 879 CE by philanthropist Shankhadhar Sakhwa, who paid off the debts of all citizens in the Kathmandu Valley during the reign of King Raghavadeva.
Khasa and Karnat Kingdoms: Between the 11th and 14th centuries, the Khasa Malla empire flourished in western Nepal (centered in Sinja Valley, Jumla), where the early Nepali language (Khas Kura) developed. Simultaneously, the Karnat Dynasty founded by Nanyadeva in 1097 CE ruled the eastern Terai from Simraungadh.
Rise of the Malla Dynasty (1200 – 1769 CE): Arideva (Ari Malla) became the first Malla monarch in the Kathmandu Valley in 1200 CE. During the 13th century, the legendary Nepali architect Araniko led 80 artisans to Tibet and the court of Kublai Khan in China, constructing the iconic White Stupa in Beijing.
Reforms and the Three Kingdoms: King Jayasthiti Malla (r. 1382–1395 CE) introduced the Manavanyayashastra legal code and organized land and occupational systems. Following the death of King Yaksha Malla in 1482 CE, the Kathmandu Valley was divided into three rival kingdoms—Kantipur (Kathmandu), Lalitpur (Patan), and Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon). Healthy competition among these kingdoms produced UNESCO World Heritage masterpieces: Siddhinarasingh Malla built the stone Krishna Mandir in Patan (1637 CE), Pratap Malla constructed Rani Pokhari in Kathmandu (1670 CE), and Bhupatindra Malla built the five-tiered Nyatapola Temple in Bhaktapur (1702 CE).

3. Modern Period: Unification, Rana Rule, and Republic
English:
Prior to the mid-18th century, Nepal was fragmented into the Baise (22 principalities) in the far west, the Chaubisi (24 principalities) in the central hills, the three Malla kingdoms in the valley, and the Sen kingdoms in the east.
Unification of Nepal (1744 – 1769 CE): King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha (a kingdom founded by Drabya Shah in 1559 CE) launched the unification campaign by capturing Nuwakot in 1744 CE (1801 BS). After conquering Kirtipur, he captured Kantipur on September 25, 1768 CE (1825 BS) during the Indra Jatra festival, followed by Lalitpur and Bhaktapur (1769 CE), establishing Kathmandu as the capital of unified Nepal. His strategic and political teachings are preserved in the Dibya Upadesh.
Anglo-Nepalese War and Treaty of Sugauli (1814 – 1816 CE): Under the regency of Queen Rajendra Laxmi and Prince Bahadur Shah, and later Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa, Nepal’s borders expanded from the Teesta River in the east to the Sutlej River in the west. Territorial disputes with the British East India Company triggered the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816), marked by the heroic defense of Nalapani by Balbhadra Kunwar, Malaun/Deothal by Bhakti Thapa, and Jitgadhi by Ujir Singh Thapa. The war ended with the Treaty of Sugauli (ratified March 4, 1816), fixing Nepal’s borders along the Mechi and Mahakali rivers.
The Rana Regime (1846 – 1951 CE): On September 14, 1846 (1903 BS), Jung Bahadur Kunwar (Rana) seized absolute power through the Kot Massacre (Kot Parva), reducing the Shah monarchs to figureheads and making the Prime Ministership hereditary. Jung Bahadur promulgated Nepal’s first codified law, the Muluki Ain, in 1854 CE, and regained the western Terai (Naya Muluk: Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur) from the British in 1860 CE. In 1923 CE, Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher signed the Nepal–Britain Treaty, formally recognizing Nepal’s unrestricted sovereignty.
Democratic Movements and the Federal Republic (1951 – Present): Inspired by martyrs Lakhan Thapa, Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha, an armed and popular revolution ended 104 years of Rana autocracy on February 18, 1951 (Falgun 7, 2007 BS). B.P. Koirala became the first democratically elected Prime Minister in 1959 CE, before King Mahendra introduced the party-less Panchayat System in 1960 CE (2017 BS). The 1990 People’s Movement (Jana Andolan I – 2046 BS) led by Ganesh Man Singh restored multi-party democracy. Following the decade-long Maoist armed conflict (1996–2006), the 2006 People’s Movement (Jana Andolan II – 2062/63 BS), and the Comprehensive Peace Accord (November 21, 2006), the Constituent Assembly abolished the 240-year-old monarchy on May 28, 2008 (Jestha 15, 2065 BS) and declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic. Nepal promulgated its federal constitution on September 20, 2015 (Ashoj 3, 2072 BS).
